Students learn about units of measurement in Math. It was fun to measure different things in our garden using our feet! It's easy to focus on Reader's Workshop when you pick a cozy spot outside. Every Thursday students check out our class garden to see what it growing and do some weeding. We also planted sunflower seeds along the exterior garden fence. Fun!

The Denver Museum of Nature and Science visited 1st-grade this week. They brought a teepee and other artifacts aimed at teaching students about a different culture. It was Step-Up day for primary grades. First-graders prepared the room for kindergarten to visit. Students also asked questions about going to 2nd-grade prior to visiting with 2nd-grade classroom teachers.
Students wrote notes and made paper flowers to express gratitude for our school's office assistants. It was our last Buddy Day and 8th grade received appreciation notes from their first-grade buddies. These students are spending Quiet Time reading a book together.
First-graders take a tour of the garden to find out what is awake and what they would like to plant this season. Bulbs planted prior to the Winter are now beginning to bloom! Students earned an extra recess and were allowed to wear costumes to celebrate their efforts. Eighth-graders joined their first-grade buddies to play charades!
Students were introduced to terracycling this past week and upcycled a material that would have been sent to the trash. Buddy time is a favorite for both 8th-graders and 1st-graders.
It was the perfect follow-up to our Natural Resources unit: an excursion to Waste Management Services. Students learned all about recycling and non-renewable natural resources. Students mine for 'coal' by using toothpicks to remove chocolate chips from the surrounding 'cookie earth'. Discussion included reflection about what happens after we use up all our non-renewable resources? A student shares an architectural Lego book with the class while the audience prepares to ask questions. Change is good. Students receive new spots in shared learning space as well as new table assignments. Let's get to know new friends!
The classroom was buzzing with excitement as first-graders prepared to teach the elementary school students about water at Friday's Round Up. Each student had an opportunity to share their knowledge about our precious resource, water! Here Sophia shows us she is ready to present! A student from each class is recognized for exhibiting the trait of resourcefulness. Students are learning the importance of visualizing while they listen to descriptive words that "pop", activating the five senses. Every Thursday first-graders visit the library. This week they chose one fiction or story book and one teaching book. Students learn about the part of our eyes that see color. Staring at different colored squares and then looking at a white piece of paper reveals which "cones" get tired and play tricks with our eyes! Buddy time was super fun! Students participated in a unique collaborative drawing activity. Eighth-graders described a picture to their buddy, (who could not see it!) and first-graders had to draw it. Then the tables turned and it was time so see how first-graders used words to describe a picture to eighth-graders.
Students participate in a visualization exercise. A poem is read to them while they identify descriptive words that "pop" during the visualization process. Later, they write down the descriptive words and draw a picture. Spontaneous Science! During recess, first-graders observe 8th-graders parachuting eggs from the roof of DGS. Will the eggs make it to the ground without breaking? During EFS, this demonstration shows students just how much fresh water is available on the Earth.
