It was a fantastic first week for our 1st-grade students! Whether we were making new friends, learning about different cultures, or moving our bodies outside, we were busy learning and growing. First-graders learned the process for planting a garden this week through a hands-on experience. First step: remove old weeds! Now that the weeds are removed, hands formed like claws till the soil in preparation for planting. Compost is added to the garden to enrich the soil. Students learned how to plant seeds. Our 1st-grade garden contains onions, spinach, beets, carrots, lettuce, and radishes. Which vegetable will sprout first? An informal survey reveals carrots will be the first to be seen. Stay tuned! Mr. Potter, a 6th-grade teacher and garden extraordinaire, shows students how important it is to maintain all areas of our school garden. Discovering and becoming familiar with simple and complex shapes brings out our students' individual expressions. Math lesson continues with blocks. Opening the doors to exploration and creativity continues. This past week also included getting to know our table teams.
