When it rains outside, first-graders' imaginations take over indoors. Discovery Reading gives students an opportunity to question what they read and record information that brought new learning or activated their schema. Harvest Festival offered a feast and games for students, staff, and families. Rain may have cancelled the Miller Farms field trip, but we still harvested vegetables at Sprout City's DGS Community Farm. Students enjoyed time with their 8th-grade buddies during this backyard excursion.

Students practicing how to us the firefighter's hose. This was a favorite activity during our trip to Denver Fire Department Fire Station 19. Students get to go inside the fire truck! We all learned how firefighters keep the people and things in our community safe. The next day, the learning continued. Students recalled their experience at the fire station and wrote small moment stories in their graphic organizers. Science time: molecules in action. This is what happens when you combine milk, food coloring, and dish detergent. Please, DO try this at home! See recipe and instructions below. Students reflected on the experiment using drawings and writing to describe what they saw. TRY THIS AT HOME! Ingredients: Whole milk (best if you allow it to warm up to room temperature) Food coloring Dish detergent (any kind) Plate or saucer-type dish Instructions: Pour milk into plate or saucer and allow time to reach room temperature Drop different colors of food coloring into milk Get ready! Drip dish detergent into milk and food coloring and experiment with what you can create Notice that the molecules keep moving long after the dish detergent is added Friday fun and bonding: Buddy Time involves partnering 1st-graders with 8th-grade students. This week we played fun games to begin the process of forming lasting relationships.
This past week was busy for 1st-graders! We went to Bluff Lake Nature Center, (lost all the photos!) and learned about forests, wetlands, and prairies. Back at the DGS garden, we explored flora and fauna. Students working hard to remove purslane from the garden, allowing crops to keep growing. Students enjoying Quiet Time. The opportunities for free reading and drawing make this a special time of day. The school-wide assembly included honoring students from each class who most represented the Dragon trait of curiosity. Congratulations!
