Whether we were getting our pictures taken or pulling old lettuce, the Farm kept us busy this week. On our way to the compost pile with Farmer Meg. Look at all those weeds the students pulled! Students reaping the rewards of planting and watering the 1st-grade garden. Vegetables are sprouting! Math unit continues with instructions to sort by names of shapes and identify characteristics. In addition to learning about shapes, students pair up with a partner, learning how to work together. Picture day revealed some spiffy wardrobe choices. We're thinking of contacting Wrigley's Doublemint Gum for these sets of twins.
Students begin by identifying shapes that will fit together to form a specific pattern. Once the pattern is completed, students need to count the number of blocks used to create the pattern. Repetition is a key to learning. Turn the paper over and start with a new pattern! On this day, students were given an exact number of pattern blocks to count out and design their own pattern. The great discovery: putting shapes together creates new shapes. All the blocks can be used to make several patterns, not just one! It's just not Friday until we have had our dance party.
Farmer Meg takes us on a tour of Sprout City Farms, the one-acre farm located on DGS grounds. What interesting information is Meg going to share about the beans? Bean leaves stick to everything all by themselves! Students learned how Sprout City Farms cares for all the food we bring to our cafeteria tables and the community.. Every Friday is Dance Party! Team building happens on many levels for 1st graders. Friends grooving to the tunes. Students express themselves in a safe and nurturing environment.
